The Dangers of Using an Israeli IP Address
Compared to other countries in the Middle East, Israel has liberal laws concerning internet access and usage. However, the government has considered legislating internet censorship in the past. It didn’t pass, but it could still happen in the future, and no one knows how far it could go.
In 2017 though, a law was enacted to block content related to online illegal gambling, terrorism, prostitution services and hard drug sales. Pornography is also blocked, but under a separate law.
ISPs have also been used to block torrent websites before, but this ban has since been lifted. That said, an amendment to Israel’s copyright law allows courts to order Israeli ISPs to block access to the sites that infringe on copyrights.
There’s also the Israel Defense Forces Censor, which the OpenNet Initiative says is “authorized to ban … any material that will or is likely to cause damage” to Israel’s security.
This means some news websites and blogs could be blocked. Consequently, journalists working for Israeli media are required to submit any Israeli security-related information, including social media posts, before publication.
That said, the restrictions may vary by location, even though censorship is enforced throughout the country, as the Hamas government in Gaza and Palestinian National Authority in the West Bank can enforce their own.
Israel’s connection with the U.S. National Security Agency through Israeli intelligence companies has raised concerns about surveillance of its citizens, though there’s little information on this. Similarly, the country has been accused of selling Pegasus, a spyware program, to several countries, enabling them to track their targets’ calls, messages and more.
